Blogger vs. Wordpress

Hello, avid reader and casual passerby! I'm currently in a quandary. Almost everyone I know raves about Wordpress, and two people who are close to me, Jez and Chloe, both recently jumped from Blogger to Wordpress. Following their (and many others) cue, I did the same thing, and made a blog on Wordpress. Here's where you can find it:

http://octoberhush.wordpress.com/

As you can see, it imported just about everything from this blog. Now, the issue I'm having is that I don't really find Wordpress any easier to use or customize than Blogger...in fact, quite the opposite. I'm not happy with any of the templates available in Wordpress, and the customizing of them seems very limited and reliant on CSS, which I haven't got a clue about. Really, all I want to do is write my little diaries, you know?

So, now's your chance to pipe in. If you're a Wordpress user, and especially if you've gone from Blogger to Wordpress, please tell me what's so great about it, because right now, I'm just not getting it.

I was going to move my blog there permanently, but now that's probably not going to happen, unless someone can change my mind. So please, help a poor little neko out. I want to hear your opinions. Thanks!

I've used both, but prefer Blogger. Like you, I prefer just to write and not worry about programming.

You have an absolutely wonderful blog. Why move it?

Aww, thanks =)

Yeah, Blogger basically does everything I need it to, and I find it very easy to use. I am probably going to stay here, but I just wanted to hear people's opinions.

Though I'm a huge WordPress fan, I'd say if you're happy with Blogger, why move? I've only used the stand-alone version of WordPress and the learning curve is pretty steep for customizing if you're unfamiliar with css, let alone php. The reason I prefer it is because I'm a control freak and wanted to do all kinds of things Blogger wouldn't allow. As far as templates--I've never found one that fit all my wants and needs, so being able to customize with WordPress, even if I had to learn a bunch of stuff, was worth it.

And your blog *is* great right here. I know I don't care where it is as long as I can read it.

Thanks, Alex. I think you explained it well. You're right; I shouldn't move if I'm happy with what I have here. =)

Hi Tober, love your blog!

From a reader's perspective, I absolutely hate Blogger and I vote that you switch. Here's why:

When I'm reading old posts that arent on the front page, and then click a link on a photo, for example, the Back button takes me back to the front page, instead of where I was, like Wordpress does.

Now that may not be a biggie to most people, but for me, who likes to read past posts, its a killer and I always like a Wordpress blog just a little bit better for that very reason.

Thanks for the compliment and the opinion, Annyka! I really appreciate it.

Unfortunately for you, that's not a good enough reason for me to switch to Wordpress. In your case, I'd suggest opening up the link to a photo in a new browser tab rather than using the back button.

Honestly, with my RL job-- I use wordpress for everything specifically because of the customization I can make it do pretty much whatever I want (though I dont use the Wordpress.com hosted options-- I download the software and use my own set of plugins)
Yet, for my character profile I use blogger-- because frankly it is easier for these kind of low level tasks.

PS-- learn some damn CSS

If it aint broke, don't fix it. A slogan we use at work :)

I agree, Anonymous. I'm going to stay here =)

Hell, stay in Blogger if you prefer. Whatever is easiest for you honey.

Thanks, Jez. The only reason why I was going to switch is because everyone was telling me WordPress was so much better, and a lot of people I know are either using Wordpress right from the start, or switched from Blogger.

Turns out, for my needs, it's really not worth it.

I switched my blog from Blogger to WordPress, but I am using the Open Source version on a hosting provider, rather than WordPress.com. Which gets around a lot of the limitations of Wordpress.com.
